Amicus members join protest


Around fifty trade unionists gathered on the steps of Hackney Town Hall at lunchtime on Friday 18th February to protest in defence of pension rights. The Trades Union Congress (TUC) had designated this as a national Day of Action on pensions.

Trade unions fight fire service cuts

Homerton FBU picket

Last year, London's fire service management produced its 'London Safety Draft Plan' - which soon became known as the 'Daft Plan' to firefighters and their union, the FBU. The London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (LFEPA), proposes to:

  • close Manchester Square Fire Station in Marylebone;

  • reduce staffing levels at fire stations with two fire appliances;
  • remove fire appliances from the following fire stations: Westminster; Knightsbridge, Kensington; Euston; Acton; Bethnal Green; Clerkenwell; Dockhead; Greenwich and Islington;
  • cut 178 firefighters' jobs across London, including 32 in our neighbouring Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Hackney has four fire stations - at Shoreditch, Homerton, Stoke Newington and Kingsland. Although none face the axe, Hackney's fire cover will be adversely affected in several ways:

A meeting took place this evening between the NATFHE negotiating team and a sub-committee of the board of governors and the statement attached below was agreed.

Hackney TUC policy: TSUNAMI DISASTER

This resolution from Finsbury Park branch RMT was agreed at HTUC's meeting in February 2005

This union expresses our deepest sympathy with the victims of the Asian earthquake and tsunami. The scale of the disaster and the suffering caused has shocked and moved us all.

We express our particular solidarity with trade unionists in the region, many of whom have lost their lives and loved ones, and seen their workplaces and trade union work destroyed.

  • That new migrant and minority ethnic communities face high levels of unemployment and underemployment, and discrimination when at work.

  • That young workers are prone to exploitation and their safety can be compromised at work because of their lack of knowledge of employment rights.
