Transport for London has announced that it intends to privatise the East London Line once the extension is built. Hackney TUC has produced:

TRADE UNIONISTS campaigning to keep the East London Line in public hands have today welcomed the parliamentary call by six London Labour MPs for the line to remain operated by the public sector when it reopens, after extension, in 2010.

Last month, I wrote to the Gazette opposing the planned privatisation of the East London Line and challenging Ken Livingstone and TfL to give one good reason why the new 'London Overground' should be run by a private operator. As far as I can see, they have not replied. Perhaps Gazette readers will draw their own conclusions.

East London Line: "Keep it public", say huge poll majority

NEARLY THREE-QUARTERS of people in London and the southeast want the East London Line's operations kept in the public sector, according to an Ipsos MORI poll commissioned by RMT, London Underground's biggest union.
